Allegro School of Music News – August 2022

December Recital Sign-Ups Coming Soon!

When:  December 3, 4, 17, 18

Where:  Catalina Foothills High School Recital Hall

How to sign up?:  We will email/text you a link to the signup

Am I eligible?:  Usually it’s best to have at least 6 months of lessons before your 1st recital

How Recitals Work

We believe that recitals are of huge importance to music students. First of all, we know of no better way to motivate a student to practice, then to put a date on the calendar and say, “You’ll be playing your song on this day for a bunch of people”!

If you or your child is eligible, you should consider signing up just for the practice incentive.

Remember, at Allegro, students usually have at least 6 months of private lessons on their instrument to be eligible to perform in our recitals.  We do make some exceptions to the 6 month if students really want to play.

“I’m eligible for the recital and I’ve signed up with my teacher, but this will be my first recital and I’m nervous about performing!  Can you help me?”

Absolutely.  The good news is that you’re in good hands!  Every teacher at Allegro School of Music has either a music degree or professional performance experience, and most of us have both.  We’ve all been there, and we’re dedicated to helping you with the following:

1. Choose a piece that is realistic for you to perform in the next recital.

2. Create and edit a version that will fit the recital time constraints

3. Learn and master the song

4. Learn proper stage etiquette and psychologically prepare for a successful performance

What lessons do you teach at Allegro?

  Drum Set and Percussion

What’s your favorite part about teaching at Allegro?

I love the enthusiasm that the kids and adults gain throughout their studies with me. At first, most students are timid, nervous, and unsure of their musical ability. Some of them have tried to learn drums on their own and, more often than not, become overwhelmed with the amount of study materials published and lack the experience needed to navigate practice materials effectively.

Around the second or third lesson there is a noticeable shift in how students act and approach drum playing . They become confident, curious, and excited to finally have a manageable and effective way to progress their talents.

How do you help your students reach their musical goals?

I consider my curriculum a living document. I’ll see or hear something from fellow colleagues and think of how their pedagogical methods could apply to my student’s lessons. That being said, all of the lessons include three main subject points: technique, music reading, and performance. Technique is usually rudiments, etudes, or solos that lend them the facility to express themselves on the instrument without limitations.

Music reading will allow them to learn songs quickly, and adds a skillset that is sought after by other musicians.

The performance aspect is, in my opinion, the true test of any musician. Playing through full songs, overcoming nerves, and learning how to practice in order to put on a successful performance for friends, family, or the Yankee stadium is the end goal of any musician, and like most aspects of music–needs to be practiced.

What are some of the cool musical pieces that your students are working on for the next Allegro Recital?

I have students performing a variety of music! The list is too vast to cite here, but here is a concise list of songs my current students have played, or are going to play.

Feel Good Inc., The Gorillaz , Living on a Prayer, Bon Jovi, Back in Black, ACDC, Seven Nation Army, White Stripes, For Whom the Bell tolls, Metallica, Starlight, Muse, Brick House, The Commodores, Eye of the Tiger,Survivor, Yellow, Coldplay, Zero, Smashing Pumpkins, Don’t Speak, No Doubt, Uptown Funk, Bruno Mars, Lovefool, The Cardigans

This list is a representation of the range of music that my students enjoy playing, and have access to. For each of the songs I have listed, students are given sheet music, and a recording or track.

Tell us anything else you’d like for us to know about you!

I have been teaching a little over a decade now, but I am relatively new at Allegro School of Music (7months). However, one thing I have learned throughout my time at Allegro is that it is really easy to be good at a job you love doing. My passion for music education as well as being offered the opportunity to mentor young, teen, and adult students throughout their studies at Allegro give me a sense of value and makes me look forward to every work day.

Congratulations, Christopher!  We’re giving you two passes for free 30 minute private lessons to give to two lucky students!
