9 Benefits of Learning a Musical Instrument
It builds language skills. As they learn their instrument, children become accustomed to different sounds that they would not have recognized before. This practice trains their ears for the nuances and subtle sounds of language.
It makes them stronger academically. Researchers have found connections between music lessons and nearly every measure of academic achievement: SAT scores, high school GPA, reading comprehension, and math skills. Music also improves their powers of recall for powerful learning in all subjects.
It increases their IQ. Numerous studies have proven that children’s IQs increase because of even a few weeks of music lessons. Brain scan technology reveals that brain activity increases following musical training, and some parts of the brain even grow larger!
It teaches them discipline.Your child may be expecting to become a viral sensation overnight, but in fact, he may have to spend hours even just learning the proper way to hold that violin or trumpet before he can even make a sound. Music lessons require hours of concentration and patience. Children must persevere even when things aren’t going well…an invaluable skill for all areas of life.
It supports muscle development and motor skills. Children must use their whole bodies to keep the rhythm going when they play. They also must coordinate different motions with their hands at the same time. In doing so, they develop strength and coordination.
It improves social skills. If children play in a group, they have to learn to work together to achieve a common goal, exercising tolerance, patience, and encouragement towards their peers.
It makes kids feel good about themselves. There’s nothing quite like the sense of pride that comes from working on building a new skill for an extended period of time…especially when the result is beautiful music.
It helps kids understand culture. By learning music from various parts of the globe, students come to understand these cultures, whether it’s African drumming or Argentine tango music.
It brings joy. And finally, we come to the most important reason of all. When children can play music, it makes them happy…and everyone else too!
We are an Official Family Safety Plan Music School!
Allegro School of Music has taken the pledge. Although we currently offer most of the plan requirements, families can expect to see cameras installed in every lesson studio very soon.
Glass Windows
While it is expected that older kids and teenagers will not want their parents to sit in on every music lesson, some parents may not feel comfortable with having their child in a separate room for a half-hour. To appease both students who wish for their lessons to be private and parents concerned about safety, we have installed windows on every single door so that parents can view their student’s lesson with peace of mind.
Office Staff
At our music academy, we require office staff to be present during lessons. Many other music academies have tight budgets and cannot afford the extra expense of employing office staff. In our opinion, this is not a safe practice and is irresponsible on the part of the academy. Our academy always has office staff present so that students are never left alone with teachers.
Background Checks
We require that teachers and staff members undergo extensive background checks. Our teachers are required to pass four tests: a National Offender Search, Statewide Criminal Background Check, National Criminal Background Check, and Social Security Number Verification. We view this as a necessary measure to preserve the safety and integrity of our academy.
Security Cameras
The safety of our students is our top priority, so we have security cameras in every single room. The precautionary program may be costly to the academy, but such a feature is worth it if it keeps our students safe and gives the parents peace of mind.
Open-Door Policy
Our school has an open-door policy for parents, which means that they’re invited to sit in on their child’s lessons. This should be something you look for when selecting an appropriate music school for your family.
