How to practice. What to practice. Stay Inspired.
We get a lot of questions regarding how and what to practice, so here are some pointers!
1. Quality over quantity
Practicing for 5-15 minutes for 3 – 5 days a week of focused practice is more effective than spending large amounts of time once or twice.
What’s focused practice?
Use techniques that engage the mind, ear, and body:
Counting and clapping rhythms. Naming the notes. Naming the fingerings. Slow practice. Work on technique. RELAX. Did I say slow practice? Practice SLOOOWLY.
2. Review, review, review
It’s easy to get caught up in only practicing new material. A lot of students feel like they aren’t getting better unless they are practicing newer and harder skills. However, this is not true.
The best way to improve is to continue to master basic skills.
This means playing music you have already learned. Work on mastering that one hard spot that always gets you. Work on playing music you already know with a backing track or a metronome. Focus on the details. And, just HAVE FUN playing music that you can already play!
3. Play in Allegro Recitals
Signing up for our recitals twice per year almost guarantees that you will practice more and reach higher levels of musicianship. Students who sign up for recitals have a clear goal and timeframe. Recitals give a healthy dose of pressure to practice and rehearse. Further, you get to share what you’ve learned with friends and family. Imagine playing a sport, but never playing in a game! Playing for others is a crucial part of every musician’s development.
4. Listen to Music. Go to see live music.
Listening to music is kind of like practicing. It’s a great way for parents and children to connect with one another. It’s a great way for people to share with others. It’s a great way to discover what you like and what inspires you to practice.
Live music is the best!
Take your budding musician to see live music. Check out Centennial Hall and Fox Theater.
5. Take a field trip to the Musical Instrument Museum
The MIM in Phoenix is a really cool place to visit. They have musical instruments from all over the world, from different cultures, genres, etc. They also have iconic instruments that belonged to famous musicians. It’s fun and educational, and great for all ages.

What students are saying…
“I’m 46 years old and always wanted to learn how to sing better but never took a singing lesson in my life. I also have very little musical training. I finally decided to sign up for voice lessons at Allegro and decided to not be shy about trying. After only one lesson, I’m already feeling really excited and looking forward to the next one! I felt totally comfortable singing with my instructor; he was very nice and explained everything clearly. Thanks Allegro!”
-Robyn Serlin
“My kiddos love the violin class from Allegro Music school by Ms. Melissa. Thank you so much.Lessons are excellent”
