Recital Preparation Tips
I believe that recitals are of huge importance to music students. First of all, I know of no better way to motivate a student to practice, then to put a date on the calendar and say, “You’ll be playing your song on this day for a bunch of people”! If you or your child is eligible, you should consider signing up just for the practice incentive.
“I’m eligible for the recital and I’ve signed up with my teacher, but this will be my first recital and I’m nervous about performing! Can you help me?”
Absolutely. The good news is that you’re in good hands! Every teacher at Allegro School of Music has either a music degree or professional performance experience, and most of us have both. We’ve all been there, and we’re dedicated to helping you with the following:
1. Choose a piece that is realistic for you to perform in the next recital.
2. Create and edit a version that will fit the recital time constraints
3. Learn and master the song
4. Learn proper stage etiquette and psychologically prepare for a successful performance
1. Choosing the right piece. Obviously, this is up to you and your teacher, but I thought I’d give you some general tips that I’ve learned after preparing hundreds and hundreds of students for recitals over the past 15 years. The most important thing to keep in mind is this: performing is an entirely separate skill from playing. Therefore, it’s best to reduce the amount of new material to a minimum. Be realistic. Sure, your ultimate goal might be to play the guitar solo to Stairway to Heaven, and if you had just a few more months… The point here is, please don’t put yourself in a position to have a bad performance because the piece is too hard for you right now. I have my students choose their songs in September if not earlier. I want to see that they can play their song fluently at least one month before the Recital date, so that we can focus on performance skills and stage presence in the lessons immediately prior to the performance. My goal is to have students that are so prepared 4 weeks before the recital, that I don’t even need to spend much time in their lessons on the Recital piece! Choosing the right piece (not too hard) and making sure you get it ready early is the most important component of playing well in public. Sometimes, I’ll have students work hard to master a difficult piece, and if they do, I let them play it, but I’ll also have a backup piece that I KNOW they can play in case they don’t. I would advise you to do the same if you want to play a song that is a big challenge for you. Make sure you have a backup that YOU KNOW you can play with ease if you are still trying to master your selection one month before the recital. In summary, crashing and burning in front of a bunch of people is no fun, and it can be particularly damaging to a first time performer. As John Wooden said, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”.
We are an Official Family Safety Plan Music School!
Glass Windows
While it is expected that older kids and teenagers will not want their parents to sit in on every music lesson, some parents may not feel comfortable with having their child in a separate room for a half-hour. To appease both students who wish for their lessons to be private and parents concerned about safety, we have installed windows on every single door so that parents can view their student’s lesson with peace of mind.
Office Staff
At our music academy, we require office staff to be present during lessons. Many other music academies have tight budgets and cannot afford the extra expense of employing office staff. In our opinion, this is not a safe practice and is irresponsible on the part of the academy. Our academy always has office staff present so that students are never left alone with teachers.
Background Checks
We require that teachers and staff members undergo extensive background checks. Our teachers are required to pass four tests: a National Offender Search, Statewide Criminal Background Check, National Criminal Background Check, and Social Security Number Verification. We view this as a necessary measure to preserve the safety and integrity of our academy.
Security Cameras
The safety of our students is our top priority, so we have security cameras in every single room. The precautionary program may be costly to the academy, but such a feature is worth it if it keeps our students safe and gives the parents peace of mind.
Open-Door Policy
Our school has an open-door policy for parents, which means that they’re invited to sit in on their child’s lessons. This should be something you look for when selecting an appropriate music school for your family.

Allegro will soon be offering Dance Classes!
Reasons to choose Allegro for Dance Classes
Professional Level Floating Floor
All of our dance classes in Tucson feature a professional level floor. Dance is a very physical activity that requires a lot of jumping. This can put stress on bones and joints. Most dance footwear does not provide any cushioning or support, so the shock of dance movement can place a lot of pressure on the knees and back of a dancer. The best way to prevent against potential injury is by choosing a studio with a professional “floating floor”. A floating floor is a dance floor that rests on a system of high-density foam, to absorb the shock of jumping. A high-density foam base is superior to a “sprung” floor, which usually consists of a wood structure built on the regular floor.
The top layer of the dance floor is also an important factor. A vinyl composite “marley” floor is accepted worldwide as the best surface layer for recreational to professional dance. Facilities such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Royal Academy of Dance in London, England, and Riverdance – The Touring Show, all use marley floors as their dance surface. A marley floor allows dancers to slide, with a degree of “controlled slip”, but is not slippery so there is less risk of slips and falls. Very few studios use professional marley floors because of the expense involved, and usually opt for a regular floor tile for a studio floor.
All of our studio locations have floating floors that have over 700 high density foam blocks under the floor surface and a marley top surface that is imported from England. Our special floors help reduce the risk of injuries and allow students to dance longer without getting tired.
Small Class Size
If the dance class has fewer students in it each child will receive more personalized attention, learn more and have more fun. With younger students smaller classes make it easier for a teacher to maintain control over the class and make sure each student understands the concepts and instructions. Our smaller class sizes make sure that no fundamental concepts are being missed. A smaller class size also allows our teachers to ensure that students are not developing bad habits or improper technique.
Our studio limits all of our classes (ages 6 and up) to a maximum of just 12 students per class. With our preschool dance classes (ages 3 – 5) we limit the size of the classes to a maximum of just 8 students per class.
Friendly Office Staff, Seven days a week
At most dance classes in Tucson, the teacher or the studio owner conducts classes and does the administration. By trying to do two jobs at once, the class may suffer as the teacher has to use class time for customer service issues, or the studio may have no customer service available if the teacher is in a class. To have a good experience it is important to choose a studio that can assist you with details like costumes or schedules, even if a teacher is occupied in a class. Our studios have office staff on hand during all regular class times, so you can get immediate assistance.

Thank you for the 5 Star Reviews
T Riley ★★★★★
The studio is neat, clean, and well thought out. I love that the safety of the children is a priority, and also that parents can sit in on the lessons. It is easy to schedule lessons, and the staff are super helpful. I have been really pleased with my child’s teacher, Jesús; he is cheerful, kind, encouraging and knowledgeable.
